Today is a great today for Boston sports fans. We have three of our teams playing in games tonight: the Bruins, the Celtics, and the Red Sox. To make it even better two out of these three games have quite a bit of importance that goes along with them.
The first game tonight is the Bruins going to Ottawa for the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs: Bruins v. Senators. This is very exciting for Bruins fans due to the fact that the Bruins haven’t made the playoffs since the 2013-2014 season. The Bruins had two very disappoint seasons prior to this season without making the playoffs. Many fans were very frustrated and disappointed by the team and a lot of fans were calling for the firing of head coach Claude Julien. After more than half the season the fans finally received what they had been asking for, the firing of Claude Julien. The Bruins replace Julien with assistant coach Bruce Cassidy who coached the team to 18-8-1 to end the season to make the playoffs. So after finally making it to the playoffs the Bruins will face off against the Senators in Ottawa at 7:00 pm ET.
The second of the three games tonight is the Celtics playing host to the Milwaukee Bucks. With this being the final regular season game for the Celtics they hold their playoff future in their own hands. If the Celtics go out and handle their business and win tonight they will clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference for the playoffs. This is a crucial game for the Celtics it doesn’t seem like a huge difference being the #1 seed v. the #2 seed, but if the Celtics make to the Eastern Conference Finals and meet Cleveland there you better hope that they have home court advantage for that series. The only chance that the Celtics have beating Cleveland in a 7-game series is to have home court advantage, and even then the chances aren’t great. This game starts an hour after the Bruins game is underway at 8:00 pm ET. If the Celtics do lose tonight they can still clinch the top seed with Toronto beating Cleveland, which is also tonight.
Finally, the third game of the evening is an AL East matchup between the Baltimore Orioles and the Red Sox. The Red Sox were able to win the first game of this series last night against the Orioles behind a strong performance from Drew Pomeranz (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K) and two big offense innings late in the game in both the 7th and 8th innings. Baltimore is coming into the series with a 4-2 record while the Red Sox, playing one more game, come into the series with a 4-3 record. The starting pitchers for tonight both struggled in their first appearances of the season and are both looking to bounce back. Tonight’s pitchers are Ubaldo Jiménez (BAL) vs. Steven Wright (BOS). Tonight’s first pitch is at 7:00 pm ET.
It will hopefully be a great night of Boston sports and hopefully all three teams can bring home victories. It’s a great day to be a Boston Sports Fan.
